Description:
Whitton was well known as a ‘market garden’ since Victorian times and was renowned for its many fruit orchards particularly apple, plum and pear .The village of Whitton was separated from surrounding towns by open fields and retained much of its earlier charming character into the 1940s. Following the opening of Whitton railway station in 1931 , residential development rapidly replaced the market gardens. New parades of shops were built near the station to service local residents and so the "High Street, Whitton" came into being.
A number of these new houses and shops were damaged by enemy bombing in the Second World War. Air raid sirens and anti-aircraft guns were common sounds in Whitton in the early years of the war. Indeed a prominent air raid siren was mounted on a mast located at the junction of Nelson and Warren roads.
Children of the time could play unsupervised in the streets and local play parks. These included Murray Park, the Kneller Recreation Ground, and Crane Park which was home to the former gunpowder mills and iconic Shot Tower.
Today , Whitton is considered to have a close community feel . The High Street is still a small busy parade of shops , home to local butchers , hairdressers and coffee shops all with a friendly feel . The presence of two large supermarket chains helps to keep the shopping local to the area.
Schools in the area are sought after as are most in the Richmond Borough.
Whitton is within easy reach of its neighbouring towns of Twickenham and Teddington . It has a train service to London Waterloo which takes 29 minutes and there is a regular bus service.
