The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, simply referred to as Kew Gardens, are 121 hectares of gardens and botanical glasshouses between Richmond and Kew. It is an internationally important botanical research and education institution as well as a major tourist attraction in West London.It is home to the world’s largest collection of living plants including more than 30,000 different kinds of plants. The herbarium, which is the largest in the world, has over 7 million preserved plant specimens.
The Kew site includes four Grade I listed buildings and 36 Grade II listed structures in an internationally significant landscape.
In July 2003, the gardens were put on the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Kew Gardens is home to such popular tourist attractions as the Palm House, the Temperate House, the Xstrata Treetop Walkway, Queen Charlotte's Cottage, Kew Palace , the Pagoda, the Sackler Crossing, as well as the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art which is the first gallery in the world dedicated solely to botanical art.
