Description:
Marble Hill House is a beautiful Palladian villa set in 66 acres of outstanding riverside parkland situated between Twickenham and Richmond .The house along with its extensive grounds are known as Marble Hill Park.
The house is now owned by English Heritage, which acquired it on 1986. Marble Hill Park provides many modern facilities including a cricket pitch and nets, tennis courts, rugby pitch green and a children's play area.
Marble Hill was built for the then mistress of King George II, Henrietta Howard, countess of Suffolk. The house and gardens were intended as an Arcadian retreat from crowded 18th-century London. Hammerton's Ferry, a pedestrian and cycle ferry service across the River Thames, links the gardens to Ham House on the opposite bank of the river. It is one of only four remaining ferry routes in London not to be replaced by a bridge or tunnel.
The grand interiors of Marble Hill House have been exquisitely restored and recreated and include a fine collection of early Georgian paintings. It hosts a collection of early Georgian furniture and paintings as well as the Lazenby Bequest Chinoiserie collection.
