New sports pitches open at Whitton School

Nearly a year since works began, the new sports facilities in Lincoln Fields Twickenham,  is finished. The scope of works involved constructing the base of the first full size 3rd Generation artificial grass football pitch  as well as substantial natural grass pitch works.

The project involved minor earthworks, land drainage installation, stone placement, sand amelioration, macadam surfacing and big roll turfing under the watchful eye of sports pitch consultants Sportslabs.

The facilities feature a new turf football pitch, a synthetic pitch and small pavilion with changing rooms that will be used by Whitton School for lessons and competitions. It will be made available to the public as part of the facilities offered by Whitton Sports and Fitness Centre.

The artificial sports pitch features one full size and three five-a-side floodlit pitches. By using a specific type of flooring and artificial turf it is uniquely also suitable for rugby.

The turf football pitch will also be used for rugby and athletics and is due to open in September.

Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said:

“The new pitches, along with the pavilion, will transform the sports facilities available to both the school and the sports centre. The new artificial pitch is state of the art, and unlike any other in the borough, is suitable for rugby. It also has floodlights and is large enough to hold up to three games at any one time. The upgraded facilities are timed perfectly for the schools transformation into an academy which specialises in sports. We have made significant investment and I’m delighted with how the project has progressed.”

Phil Davies, Headteacher at Whitton School, said:

“Our pupils and local community are now benefiting from the best out door sports facilities in this part of London. We are already seeing an increase in the number of our youngsters attending extra curricular clubs. Many of the pupils in our local primary schools have also had the chance to use this wonderful pitch.”
