New Zealand win the Rugby World Cup at Twickenham

05 September 2010

Description:

New Zealand's Black Ferns have won the Rugby World Cup for the fourth year running. This is not to say that the England Team were not worthy opposition playing suberb & passionate rugby throughout. The game was the stuff of legends, exhilerating and nail-biting to the bitter end. There were 13,253 spectators at the Twickenham Stoop watching the fairer version of the sport, many of whom witnessed their first ever women's rugby match, many today are surely converts after such an epic game.

England was defiant in the face of a team that have only ever lost three times and have never lost in an official Women's World Cup. There are many parallels that can be drawn between the New Zealand All Blacks and the Black Ferns, from their ball handling skills to their very apparent  power and determination. They camped in England's half for the fiirst 20 minutes of the game and would have been ahead, but failed to convert two penalties.

The Black Ferns were reduced to 13 players in the first half after two yellow cards, but led 7-0 after a side-stepping try from winger Carla Hohepa.

The Australian referee came under criticism when New Zealand lost skipper Melissa Ruscoe to the sin bin early in the second half which surely aided a fine Charlotte Barras try allowed England to fight back to 10-10. The atmosphere in the Stoop was electric as the Red Roses flung themselves into tackles with no regard for personal safety with Joanna McGilchrist heroically stopping  winger Carla Hohepa's clean break.

The tension increased in the stadium when a penalty was conceded for holding on and centre Kelly Brazier sealed the New Zealand hat-trick by converting what was to be the winning penalty 16 minutes  from the end.

Final Score :-
New Zealand 13 Tries: Hohepa Pens: Brazier 2 Cons: Brazier
England         10 Tries: Barras Cons: McLean Pens: McLean

England captain Catherine Spencer said: 'The support was fantastic. It is a moment in my life I will never forget. I'm just sorry we couldn't get the win.'

New Zealand's Carla Hohepa has been named the IRB's Personality of the Year for 2010 following  her performance at the women's Rugby World Cup final.
